Overview

The ancient region of Gandhara, which included portions of present-day Pakistan and Afghanistan, was a thriving center of art, learning, and culture. It is most known for being a Buddhist center. The distinctive Greco-Buddhist art style was produced by a unique fusion of Indian, Persian, and Hellenistic Greek traditions. The most notable contribution of this art form is the creation of the first anthropomorphic depictions of the Buddha, which revolutionized Buddhist iconography throughout Asia.
